Living in Woodbury, Connecticut

Woodbury sits in the Pomperaug River valley in Litchfield County, about 10 miles west of Waterbury, where the Nonnewaug and Weekeepeemee Rivers meet to form the Pomperaug. Settlers from Stratford founded the town in 1673 and it was incorporated in 1674, making it one of the older towns in the state. Its Main Street runs for roughly a mile past 18th- and 19th-century houses, many now antique shops, which is why the town is often called Connecticut's antiques capital.

A little history

Woodbury was founded in the early 1670s by settlers from Stratford and incorporated as a town in 1674.

On March 25, 1783, a meeting of ten Episcopal clergy at the Glebe House elected Samuel Seabury the first American Episcopal bishop.

The town's historic Main Street, roughly a mile of 18th- and 19th-century buildings, is the basis for Woodbury's reputation as an antiques destination.

Walkability and getting around Woodbury

Main Street in Woodbury Center has sidewalks connecting the antique shops, Town Hall and a few restaurants, so an afternoon of antiquing works on foot once you're parked. Outside the center, and in North Woodbury and Hotchkissville, the roads are rural without consistent sidewalks, so a car is the practical way to get around.
