Oxford was incorporated in October 1798 and named for Oxford, England.

In the 18th century, farmers drove livestock through Oxford from as far as Litchfield on the way to the port of New Haven.

On August 18, 2024, Oxford recorded 16.31 inches of rainfall in a single storm, the highest ever recorded in Connecticut, surpassing the previous record set by Hurricane Diane in 1955.
