Its downtown was originally called Humphreysville after Revolutionary War veteran David Humphreys, who ran a factory there, and the town took its current name and was incorporated in 1850 after Governor Thomas H. Seymour.

Seymour covers about 14.6 square miles and borders Oxford, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Woodbridge, Ansonia, Derby and Shelton. It was incorporated in 1850.

The site of present-day Seymour was known as Wesquantuck, then Chusetown, a Paugusset and Schaghticoke settlement named for Chief Joseph Mauwehu, before European settlement.
The downtown area was called Humphreysville after David Humphreys, a Revolutionary War veteran who bought a factory there that made scythes, tools and wool products.
Seymour was incorporated as its own town in May 1850, separating from Derby, and was named for Connecticut Governor Thomas H. Seymour.
Seymour's outdoor life follows the Naugatuck River through downtown, with the Great Hill area to the west running toward the Housatonic River.
