Churaevka (Russian Village) Historic District
An artists' colony founded in the 1920s by Russian expatriates including Count Ilya Tolstoy, son of Leo Tolstoy. St. Sergius Chapel, designed by Nicholas Roerich and built in 1932–1933, still stands on Main Street, and the district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A little history
Southbury was originally part of Woodbury, settled in 1673, and was incorporated as its own town in 1787; it moved from Litchfield County to New Haven County in 1807.
In the 1920s, Russian expatriates including Count Ilya Tolstoy founded the Churaevka artists' colony on Main Street; St. Sergius Chapel, designed by Nicholas Roerich, remains from that colony.
In 1937, residents learned that a member of the pro-Nazi German American Bund had purchased land in town to build a training facility; a town meeting set up a zoning rule barring non-U.S.-military activity, and the Bund abandoned the plan.
