A little history
Washington was incorporated in 1779 and is made up of several villages, including Washington Depot, Washington Green, New Preston, Marbledale and Woodville.
Frederick W. Gunn, the abolitionist founder of the Gunnery preparatory school in Washington, opened one of the earliest organized summer camps in the country in 1861, and the town was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
The August 1955 flood on the Shepaug River caused major damage to homes and businesses in Washington Depot.
