A little history
Litchfield was incorporated in 1719 as Bantam township and became the county seat of Litchfield County in 1751.
The Litchfield Law School, founded by Tapping Reeve in 1784, was the first law school in the United States and trained more than 1,100 students over its 50-year history, including Aaron Burr Jr. and Horace Mann.
Sarah Pierce founded the Litchfield Female Academy in 1792, an early institution for the education of young women.

The Northwestern Connecticut Transit District runs bus service connecting Litchfield to Torrington. There is no passenger rail service in town; the Shepaug Valley Railroad's Litchfield passenger service ended in 1930.
