The area was first settled in 1713 under the name Swampfield and incorporated in 1718 as Sunderland, renamed for Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, to help attract new residents.

The area that became Leverett was originally part of Sunderland's territory until Leverett was incorporated separately in 1774.
