A little history
Leverett was settled in 1750 and incorporated in 1774, named for John Leverett, the twentieth governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; the town was formed in part from territory that had belonged to Sunderland.
The New England Peace Pagoda, built by Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist monks in 1985, is considered the first Peace Pagoda built in North America.
