Erving was among the last unincorporated tracts of land in Massachusetts before its 1838 incorporation, and was named for John Erving, an early landowner.
The Millers River powered a 19th-century industrial economy in Erving that included sawmills, chair factories and paper mills; Erving Industries' paper mill remains in operation.
