A little history
Northfield was first settled in 1673, more than fifty years before its 1723 incorporation, following earlier attempts at settlement that were abandoned during regional conflicts.
Evangelist Dwight L. Moody, a Northfield native, founded schools in East Northfield in the late 19th century that later became Northfield Mount Hermon School; the former Mount Hermon campus became a New England campus of Thomas Aquinas College in 2019.
The Connecticut River divides Northfield into east and west sections, making it the only Massachusetts town split by the river; the Schell Bridge that once connected them has been closed since 1985.
