Stonington Borough
Stonington became part of Connecticut in 1662 and was given its present name, meaning 'stony town,' in 1666.
In August 1814, during the War of 1812, the town withstood a three-day naval bombardment by a British squadron under Sir Thomas Hardy after its Selectmen refused to surrender; the engagement is known as the Battle of Stonington.
From the 1790s onward Stonington's harbor supported a fleet of sealing and whaling ships; Stonington captain Nathaniel Palmer is credited with first sighting Antarctica's Palmer Land in 1820.
Stonington's coastline on Long Island Sound and its harbor give the town beach access, boating and a working waterfront alongside its historic borough.
Stonington Borough is compact and walkable, with Water Street's shops and restaurants a few blocks from the harbor; other parts of town, including Pawcatuck, are more spread out and require a car.
