A little history
Groton separated from New London and was incorporated as its own town in 1705.
The Battle of Groton Heights was fought at Fort Griswold on September 6, 1781, when British forces under Benedict Arnold overran the fort's American garrison; a 135-foot granite monument built in 1830 commemorates the 85 American soldiers killed.
General Dynamics Electric Boat has built submarines in Groton since the early 20th century and remains the U.S. Navy's primary submarine contractor.
