Ledyard was set off from Groton by an act of the Connecticut legislature in 1836 and named for Colonel William Ledyard, who commanded American forces at the 1781 Battle of Groton Heights.
The town's glacial geology, including the Ledyard Moraine and numerous glacial erratics, reflects its coverage by a continental ice sheet during the last ice age.
