Middleborough is a town in Plymouth County, about 15 miles west of Plymouth and 40 miles south of Boston, and at 72.2 square miles is one of the largest municipalities in Massachusetts by land area. It was first settled around 1660 on the site of the Native American settlement of Nemasket and incorporated in 1669; its western section broke away in 1853 to become the town of Lakeville. The Nemasket and Taunton rivers and a cluster of large ponds cover much of the town, and Middleborough calls itself the "Cranberry Capital of the World."

A little history
The area was home to the Native American settlement of Nemasket before English settlement around 1660; the village was burned during King Philip's War in 1675-76.
Middleborough was incorporated as a town in 1669 and its western section separated in 1853 to form the town of Lakeville.
Middleborough became a center of the shoe industry, and the Alden Shoe Company, founded in the 19th century, still operates in town today.
