It was settled in 1639 as part of Taunton and incorporated as its own town in 1731, taking its name from East Raynham in Norfolk, England. Bog iron discovered in town in 1652 led to the Taunton Iron Works, one of the earliest iron works in Plymouth Colony, and the Interstate 495/Route 24 interchange sits at Raynham's border with Bridgewater.
