A little history
Holbrook was set off from Braintree as East Randolph and incorporated under the name Holbrook on February 29, 1872, the last town formed from Braintree's original territory.
Farming and cottage trades, especially shoe production, drove Holbrook's economy in the 18th and 19th centuries, with shoe manufacturing expanding sharply during the Civil War to supply military boots.
The former Baird and McGuire chemical plant site in Holbrook was placed on the EPA's National Priorities List in 1982 as a major Superfund site; cleanup, including incineration of about 248,000 tons of contaminated soil, was completed in 1997.
