Union was the last town east of the Connecticut River to be settled, and was officially established in 1734 after the General Assembly sold the land to proprietors.
Union has the highest town center in eastern Connecticut at 1,015 feet elevation, and Burley Hill in the town's northwest is the highest point in eastern Connecticut at 1,315 feet; Interstate 84 also reaches its highest elevation in Connecticut, 1,002 feet, within Union.
Approximately one-third of Union is state park and forest land, including Bigelow Hollow State Park and Nipmuck State Forest, totaling nearly 34,000 acres of forestland in town.
