Thompson was settled around 1700 as part of Killingly and was incorporated as its own town in 1785, taking its name from English landholder Sir Robert Thompson.

The Great East Thompson Train Wreck of December 1891 involved four trains and is considered one of the worst rail accidents in U.S. history.
