Webster was incorporated in 1832 and founded by textile industrialist Samuel Slater, who established mills here and named the town for his friend, statesman Daniel Webster.
The area was historically the home of the Chaubunagungamaug Reservation of the Nipmuc.
Webster Lake's full Nipmuc-derived name, Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, is one of the longest place names in the United States.
