Portland was incorporated as a town in 1841.
Portland's brownstone quarries supplied stone for Hartford's Old State House, built in 1796, and for brownstone buildings across the Northeast; the quarries employed more than 1,500 workers by the 1850s.
The brownstone quarrying industry declined after the Connecticut River flooded the quarries in 1936.
