A little history
The area was settled starting in 1739 by families who traveled up the Connecticut River from Eastham, Massachusetts, and the town was incorporated in 1767 as Chatham, named for Chatham, Medway, England, for their shared shipbuilding industries.
In the 19th century East Hampton became the center of American bell manufacturing, with about thirty firms producing bells and bell-related goods, earning the town the nickname "Belltown"; the town was renamed from Chatham to East Hampton in 1915.
Comstock's Bridge, the only remaining covered bridge in eastern Connecticut, still spans the Salmon River near Route 16.
