A little history
Wethersfield settlers first occupied the land that became Newington in 1636, calling it "West Farms" or "West Society."
In 1721, the Connecticut General Assembly granted the area the name "Newington," meaning "the new town in the meadow," though it remained part of Wethersfield for another 150 years.
Newington was officially incorporated as its own town in 1871.
