Farmington is a town in the Farmington Valley in Hartford County, about 10 miles west of Hartford at the hub of several I-84 interchanges. Settled in 1640 along the floodplain of the Farmington River, it is the oldest inland settlement west of the Connecticut River. Its Main Street historic district holds colonial-era homes, and the town's northwestern corner is the former mill village of Unionville.

A little history

Farmington was settled by English colonists from Hartford in 1640 and incorporated in 1645, making it the oldest inland settlement west of the Connecticut River in Connecticut.

Nine other central Connecticut towns, including Southington, Bristol and Avon, were formed from land originally part of Farmington, earning it the nickname 'mother of towns.'

In 1841, the Mende Africans from the Amistad slave ship trial, including their leader Cinqué, were housed and educated in Farmington while funds were raised for their return to Africa.
