A little history
Eastford was formed in 1847 when it separated from Ashford, Connecticut; its name is locational, describing its position east of Ashford.
The hamlet of Phoenixville grew up around a twine mill built in 1831 on the Still River; the mill later closed and the Union Society of Phoenixville House there was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
Union Army General Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in the Civil War, was born in Ashford and is buried in Eastford in his family plot.
