Prudence Crandall Museum
A National Historic Landmark house where Prudence Crandall ran a school for Black girls starting in 1833, one of the first of its kind in the country. The state designated Crandall its official state heroine in 1995. Tours cover five rooms on the first floor and run about an hour.

A little history
In 1832, Prudence Crandall, a Quaker-raised schoolteacher, opened her Canterbury Female Boarding School to Black students, drawing national controversy; the state later named her its official heroine in 1995.
The town was settled in the 1680s under the name Peagscomsuck before its 1703 incorporation as Canterbury.
