Montgomery is a small hill town in Hampden County, on a high plain between Lizzie Mountain and the Tekoa and Shatterack mountains, about 17 miles west-northwest of Springfield. It was set off from parts of Westfield, Southampton and what became Huntington and incorporated in 1780, taking its name from General Richard Montgomery, who died at the Battle of Quebec in 1775. The Westfield River forms part of the town's border with Russell.
