Methuen is a city in Essex County on the northern bank of the Merrimack River, about 30 miles north-northwest of Boston on the New Hampshire border. First settled in 1642 and incorporated as a town in 1725, it became a city in 1917; the Spicket River, which powered the 19th-century Methuen Cotton Mills, still runs through the city on its way to the Merrimack.

Methuen was first settled in 1642 and incorporated as a town in 1725, named for Sir Paul Methuen of the King's Privy Council.

The Methuen Cotton Mills grew up around the Spicket River falls in the 1800s, driving the city's 19th-century industrial growth.
