Malden was settled in 1640 and incorporated as its own town in 1649 under the name 'Mauldon.'

During the Revolutionary era, Malden was among the first towns to petition the colonial government to secede from the British Empire.

The Converse Rubber Factory once operated in the Edgeworth neighborhood at the bottom of Pearl Street, the original home of the Converse 'All-Star' basketball sneaker.
