Lunenburg is a town in northern Worcester County, first settled in 1718 and incorporated in 1728, named after King George II's title Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. During King George's War (1744-1748), French-allied First Nations raided the village and took settlers captive to Quebec, and part of the town later broke away to help form Fitchburg around 1764. Routes 2A, 13 and 225 pass through town, and Whalom Lake was home to Whalom Park, a noted amusement park that operated through the 20th century before closing in 2000.

Lunenburg was first settled in 1718 and incorporated in 1728, named after King George II's title, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
During King George's War (1744-1748), French-allied First Nations raided the village and took settlers captive to Quebec.
Part of Lunenburg broke away around 1764, in part over the distance residents had to travel to church and town meetings, contributing to the formation of Fitchburg.
Whalom Park, an amusement park on Whalom Lake, operated through the 20th century before closing in 2000, unable to compete with the newer Six Flags New England.
