A little history

William Pynchon led an expedition from Springfield in 1636 that purchased the meadowland known to the Agawam people as "Masacksic," or "the long meddowe"; the first house on the site was built around 1649, and the area remained part of Springfield for decades afterward.

After a destructive flood in 1695, residents moved their settlement to higher ground on what is now Longmeadow Street; a meetinghouse was under construction by 1714, and the town was incorporated on October 17, 1783.

In 1894, the more industrialized eastern section of Longmeadow, home to its brownstone quarries, separated to form the town of East Longmeadow.
