Hopkinton is a town in southwestern Middlesex County in the MetroWest region, incorporated on December 13, 1715, and named for Edward Hopkins, a Connecticut colonist whose bequest helped fund Harvard College's land purchases. It is best known as the starting point of the Boston Marathon, run each Patriots' Day since 1924, and it sits about midway between Boston and Worcester.

A little history

Hopkinton was incorporated on December 13, 1715, named for Edward Hopkins, a Connecticut colonist whose bequest helped fund Harvard College's early land purchases.

Grain farming dominated Hopkinton's early economy; boot and shoe manufacturing became a major industry from about 1850 until the early 1880s before relocating elsewhere.

The Boston Marathon has started in Hopkinton every Patriots' Day since 1924.

Hopkinton has no MBTA commuter rail station of its own; the nearest station is in neighboring Southborough on the Framingham/Worcester Line, with service to Boston's South Station and Back Bay in roughly 50 minutes. The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority runs Route 305 between the Blandin Hub and Dell's Hopkinton campus via Routes 126/135 and South Street.
