Framingham was incorporated as a town on June 26, 1700, in an area that had already seen tension during King Philip's War in 1675-1676.

A British officer conducted reconnaissance in Framingham on February 22, 1775, at Buckminster's Tavern, ahead of the Revolutionary War.

Abolitionist rallies were held at Harmony Grove in Framingham from 1854 to 1865, including one where William Lloyd Garrison burned a copy of the Fugitive Slave Law.

Framingham changed from a town to a city form of government on January 1, 2018.
