A little history
Dalton was incorporated in 1784 and grew as a mill town along the East Branch of the Housatonic River.
In 1801, Zenas Crane, Henry Wiswall and John Willard founded a paper mill in Dalton; by 1844 it was producing banknote paper, and the resulting company, Crane & Co., has been the sole supplier of paper for U.S. Federal Reserve Notes since 1873.
Dalton was for many years connected to Pittsfield by trolley service.
