A little history
Land that became Windham was left to settlers by Joshua Uncas, son of the Mohegan sachem Uncas, under a will dated 1675.
In the early 1800s, industrial development shifted the town's economic center from Windham Center to Willimantic because of the water power available along the rivers there.
Willimantic was incorporated as an independent city in 1893 and rejoined the town of Windham in 1983.
