A little history
Wilton was first settled as an area of Norwalk and organized as an ecclesiastical parish in 1726 before becoming an independent town in 1802.
Painter J. Alden Weir bought a farm in Wilton in 1882 that became a gathering place for American Impressionist artists; it's preserved today as Weir Farm National Historical Park, the only National Park Service site dedicated to an American painter.
The Cannondale section grew up around a 19th-century mill village and rail stop, and is now a National Register historic district.
