A little history
The area was known to the Pequot as Machamux; colonial settlement began in 1693 when the five Bankside Farmers arrived, and the community was officially named Green's Farm in 1732 before incorporating as the Town of Westport on May 28, 1835.
Westport was once the leading onion-growing center in the United States; blight later collapsed the onion industry, and mills and factories took over as the town's economic base.
Starting around 1910, artists, musicians and authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald moved to Westport, giving it a lasting reputation as an arts center.
