The area was first settled by Europeans around 1650, as part of Farmington.

Growth accelerated after the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the Hartford, Providence and Fishkill Railroad reached the area in the 1860s.

Plainville incorporated as its own town in 1869, separating from Farmington.
