Dutch settlers established a short-lived trading post at Old Saybrook in 1624.
The Collegiate School of Connecticut, later renamed Yale University, was chartered in Old Saybrook on October 9, 1701, before relocating to New Haven in 1716.
The town separated from the original Saybrook in 1852 and was partitioned again in 1854 when Essex became independent.
