A little history

Deep River was originally part of the Saybrook Colony, which joined Connecticut in 1644; the town took the name Deep River in 1947, having previously been a section of Saybrook.

From roughly 1840 to 1940, Deep River was a major center of the ivory trade: mills along the Deep River stream processed imported ivory into piano keys, combs and other goods, and Phineas Pratt developed an ivory-cutting lathe used in the industry.
