A little history
New Haven was settled on April 3, 1638, and laid out as a nine-square grid, one of the first planned cities in the country; it was incorporated as a city in 1784.
Yale University moved to New Haven in 1716 and was renamed Yale College in 1718; it remains one of the city's largest institutions.
New Haven was the site of the 1839 Amistad case, in which captive Africans who had seized the schooner Amistad were tried and ultimately freed, becoming a landmark moment for the American abolitionist movement.
