A little history
Naugatuck incorporated as a town in 1844 from parts of Waterbury, Bethany, and Oxford; the Borough of Naugatuck was established in 1893 and became coextensive with the town in 1895.
In 1892, nine firms consolidated in Naugatuck to form the United States Rubber Company, later Uniroyal, which kept major operations in the borough for decades; in 1936 the company introduced Naugahyde, a vinyl-coated fabric invented there.
On August 19, 1955, the Naugatuck River flooded after more than 10 inches of rain from Hurricane Diane, causing widespread destruction that reshaped the borough's riverfront.
