English colonists bought the land from Ansantawae, chief of the Paugussett, in 1639 and built a grist mill on the Wepawaug River the following year. A little history
English colonists purchased the land that became Milford from Ansantawae, chief of the Paugussett, on February 1, 1639, and built a grist mill on the Wepawaug River in 1640.
During the Revolutionary War, Fort Trumbull was built in Milford to help protect the shoreline during the British blockade of Boston.
For much of its history Milford's economy centered on shipbuilding, farming and oystering along its Long Island Sound shoreline.
