Plan a visitHartland was settled in 1754, when Captain Thomas Giddings Jr. and his wife Mary Coult became its first permanent residents, and the town was incorporated in 1761 after 44 families petitioned the General Court.
The village of Hartland Hollow, a third historic settlement also called Hartland Center, was submerged in 1940 when the Saville Dam created the Barkhamsted Reservoir, requiring the relocation of more than 1,000 people and four cemeteries.
