East Lyme was formally incorporated in 1839, formed from the portion of Lyme east of the Four Mile River.
The Thomas Lee House, built around 1660, is among Connecticut's oldest surviving structures and stands in East Lyme.
The area was originally inhabited by the Nehantic people, for whom the village of Niantic is named.
