Deep River town hall on Main Street

Living in Deep River, Connecticut

Deep River sits on the west bank of the Connecticut River in the Lower Connecticut River Valley. The town was part of the original Saybrook Colony and took its current name in 1947; from about 1840 to 1940 it was a center of the ivory trade, milling and carving ivory shipped from Africa into piano keys and combs. The Deep River stream, which powered those mills, still runs through the center of town on its way to the Connecticut River.

A little history

Deep River was originally part of the Saybrook Colony, which joined Connecticut in 1644; the town took the name Deep River in 1947, having previously been a section of Saybrook.

From roughly 1840 to 1940, Deep River was a major center of the ivory trade: mills along the Deep River stream processed imported ivory into piano keys, combs and other goods, and Phineas Pratt developed an ivory-cutting lathe used in the industry.
