Danbury was settled in 1685 and became known as "The Hat City": by 1887, about thirty factories in the city were producing roughly 5 million hats a year.
The city and town governments consolidated in 1965 after Danbury had operated as a separate city (incorporated 1889) within the town since the 19th century.
