A little history
Merchant Anson Green Phelps founded the settlement in 1844 to house workers for his brass and copper mills, and the city takes his name.
Ansonia native Pierre Lallement is credited with building an early bicycle here in 1866, one of the first in the United States.
The Flood of 1955, caused by Hurricane Diane, sent the Naugatuck River over its banks and devastated the Naugatuck Valley; a flood-control wall now runs along the river through the city.
