Warren
Warren was incorporated in 1741 as the town of Western, land taken from the Quaboag Plantation and from parcels of Palmer and Brimfield; it was renamed Warren in 1834 after residents grew tired of mail being confused with the town of Weston.
The town is named for General Joseph Warren, who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.
Warren historically contained several distinct villages -- Number 4 Village, Center Village, West Warren, Lower Village and South Warren -- each marked today by historical markers.
The Quaboag River runs through the center of Warren and through West Warren, shaping the town's old mill villages.
Warren center and West Warren each have a walkable core of a few blocks around their historic mill-village streets, but the two villages are separated by several miles and a car is needed to get between them or to reach most other parts of town.
Approximate, without traffic.
Warren has no fixed-route public bus service; the nearest Amtrak service is on the Lake Shore Limited/Vermonter route through nearby Palmer.
