The area was first settled in 1661 as part of Dunstable Township; Colonel Jonathan Tyng settled there in 1675, and the town was later named for him.

Tyngsborough was incorporated as a separate town on February 23, 1809.

The town's history includes ferries that once crossed the Merrimack River and granite quarries; the current Tyngsborough Bridge, a single-arched steel bridge, was built in 1931.
