A little history
The area was occupied by Nipmuc and other Native American groups for thousands of years before European settlement; a 1675 attack during King Philip's War, known as "Wheeler's Surprise," destroyed the earlier Quaboag plantation nearby.
European settlers recolonized the area in 1709, and New Braintree was officially incorporated as a town in 1751.
The Massachusetts State Police Academy has been located in New Braintree since 1992, on a site that had earlier been proposed for a state prison.
